The History of Tablets

Many people think the Apple iPad* was the start of the tablet craze, however the origin of the tablet goes way back. Some say even as far as the 1800s! Let’s see what was happening way before the iPad* hit the market.

1989: GRIDpad*

An early breakthrough, the GRIDpad* was a rugged computer that included a 10-inch stylus-ready screen, advanced handwriting-recognition capability, and no physical keyboard. The GRiDpad blazed the trail for the PalmPilot* and Apple Newton*.

1993: MessagePad* (Apple*)

The MessagePad* was one of the first personal digital assistants (PDA). It ran the Newton* operating system and was powered by an ARM* processor. Ultimately the device failed due to its high price, weak battery life (it ran on four AAA batteries!) and buggy handwriting recognition software.

1996: PalmPilot 1000*

Many will point to the PalmPilot* as the direct predecessor of the tablet PC. Its features included good battery life, a calendar, a glass touch screen, syncing with a desktop PC, and expandable memory. The PalmPilot* was the first tablet-like device to enjoy mainstream success.

2010: Amazon Kindle*

While the Kindle* was not the first e-reader to the market, it did enjoy the most success. Using the Kindle*, customers could read, download, browse, and shop for e-books, newspapers, and much more—all via a wireless connection.
